Density waves and supersolidity in rapidly rotating atomic Fermi gases.

We study theoretically the low-temperature phases of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive s-wave interactions under conditions of rapid rotation. We find that, in the extreme quantum limit, when all particles occupy the lowest Landau level, the normal state is unstable to the formation of charge density wave (CDW) order. At lower rotation rates, when many Landau levels are occupied,...

Rapidly rotating fermi gases

We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau-level-like energy spectrum. Depending on the aspect ratio of the trap, these features can be a sequence of ellipsoidal volumes or a sequence of quantized steps.

Rapidly Rotating Atomic Gases

This article reviews developments in the theory of rapidly rotating degenerate atomic gases. The main focus is on the equilibrium properties of a single component atomic Bose gas, which (at least at rest) forms a Bose-Einstein condensate. Rotation leads to the formation of quantized vortices which order into a vortex array, in close analogy with the behaviour of superfluid helium. Under conditi...

Density correlations in ultracold atomic Fermi gases

We investigate density fluctuations in a coherent ensemble of interacting fermionic atoms. Adapting the concept of full counting statistics, well known from quantum optics and mesoscopic electron transport, we study second-order as well as higher-order correlators of density fluctuations. Using the mean-field BCS state to describe the whole interval between the BCS limit and the Bose-Einstein c...

Wigner Crystallization in Rapidly Rotating 2D dipolar fermi gases.

We study the competition between the Wigner crystal and the Laughlin liquid states in an ultracold quasi-two-dimensional rapidly rotating polarized fermionic dipolar gas, and find that the Wigner crystal has a lower energy below a critical filling factor. We examine the quantum crystal to liquid transition for different confinements in the third direction. Our analysis of the phonon spectra of ...
